Change your air filters on schedule.  This is one of the most important things you can do for the air in your home.  Change out your filter at least every three months and spend the extra few dollars on a good filter.  The cheap filters are less effective and won’t last as long.

Eliminate air contaminants.  It goes without saying that you should track down any potential contaminants in your home, such as gas stoves, lead paint, mold, or asbestos.  Attack the problem at its source.

Use an air purifier.  These are readily available, relatively inexpensive, and can make a significant impact on the air you breathe.  Note that you will have to research for the best model to suit your needs.

Combat pollutants with frequent cleaning.  Cleaning your carpet and upholstery frequently will help to improve your air quality.

Open your windows.  Many heating and cooling systems do not bring fresh air in, and proper ventilation is key to lowering the number of pollutants in the air of your home.  Run the attic fan, open windows and doors, or run window units with the vent control open.
