What Does HVAC Duct Do?
If you have central heating and cooling, ductwork carries the conditioned air throughout your home and back to your A/C unit. Residential HVAC Ductwork, like the kind found in your home, is generally limited to 2-3 types.
For central HVAC, there are two main types of duct that carry air: supply and return. Supply duct supplies the conditioned air. These are found in the vents of your floor, wall, or ceiling. If your unit is in the attic, supply duct would be insulated, and therefore easy to spot. Return duct, however, takes air from your living space and returns it to the unit so that the air can be conditioned again. You will find a return duct when you are changing your filter; the air that passes through the filter is the return air. If your unit is in the attic, the return duct could be insulated but is most likely sheet metal or flex duct.
