When Should I Change My Air Filter?
When should you change the filter on your air conditioner? A good rule of thumb is every 90 days but some homeowners may benefit from changing them monthly. There are several factors that will affect the timing:
Filters with high-efficiency ratings or MERV ratings will remove more allergens from the air and decrease the likelihood that particles would find their way into your air conditioning equipment. These filters would need to be changed more frequently as they would collect more particles–a MERV 12 pleated filter, HEPA filter, or electrostatic filter should be changed/cleaned on a monthly basis. Cheap filters would collect less air particles and would therefore not be changed as often by comparison.
To maintain the proper operation of your air conditioner and ensure Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), use high-efficiency filters and change or clean them monthly.
