Air Filter Maintenance

Air filter maintenance is critical to not only the efficiency of your HVAC system but also your home’s air quality.

Installing air filters in furnace

The standard rule for Air filter maintenance is every three months. However, this frequency is not set in stone. Factors like the current season, the specific environment, and the type of filters you employ can dictate a more frequent replacement schedule. Premium filters, while superior in trapping pollutants, may necessitate more regular changes due to their finer mesh. To avoid any lapses in air quality or system efficiency, a monthly check is a wise precaution, coupled with adherence to any specific guidelines provided by the filter manufacturer.

When it’s time to switch filters, the process is usually straightforward. Simply slide out the old filter and replace it with a new one, ensuring no additional steps are overlooked. Filters range from disposable, one-time-use options to more durable, permanent ones designed for repeated use following a thorough cleaning.

When selecting a filter, its efficiency ratings, often reflected in the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV), will guide you to the best option. A higher MERV indicates a more effective filter at trapping airborne particles. Choices such as MERV 12 pleated filters, HEPA filters, or electrostatic filters are all commendable but remember, their heightened trapping ability means they’ll need replacing more frequently.
