Heating and Cooling System Efficiency
When faced with a choice between similar units, how should you decide which one to purchase? Simple. It’s all about efficiency. Let’s say that you have whittled your choices down to two systems and both cost roughly the same amount of money, have the same basic features, and have the same heating or cooling capacity. Consider the higher efficiency unit. It will cost less to operate and you may recover the initial outlay for purchase over the life of the unit…and then some.
Heating and cooling systems are rated according to the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). The higher the SEER, the more efficient the system. To compare the efficiency of two units with equal cooling capacity, take the difference in SEER’s and divide by the larger SEER. So if system #1 has a SEER of 10, and system #2 has a SEER of 12, system #2 would provide the same amount of cooling as system #1 while consuming 16% less energy:
12-10=2 and 2/12=.16
Also, don’t forget to compare manufacturer’s warranties, rebates and preventative maintenance agreements when buying a new heating and cooling system.
